Ash Kyrie

  • “Architectural Emphasis” is a study of formal aesthetics creating flat color planes from images of architecture. I am interested in the geometric patterns and texture presented in these large photographs. The varying hue, light, and tones and its effect of visually flattening the photograph make these seem more like paintings than images born from a camera . I use the buildings structure and shadows to compress the image into a flat plane, addressing attention to the composition of shapes, texture, and color.

  • Ash Kyrie was raised in a blue-collar town in northern Wisconsin where he joined the Army National Guard at the age of 18. He was deployed to Iraq during the first rotation of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. Serving the standard six year military contract, Ash rose to the rank of e-5 sergeant.

After returning from the war, Ash continued his studies in the University of Wisconsin-Madison arts program. In 2007 he graduated with a BFA emphasizing sculpture and photography. He graduated The Ohio State University with an MFA, with a concentration in Comparative Cultural Studies.  While at Ohio State, Ash taught 300 to 600 level collegiate courses in both his major and minor departments.

Ash Kyrie's artwork engages beauty, composition, and abstracted spacial planes.
