Paula Swaydan-Grebel

  • I draw and paint as a means of expression. As far back as I can remember I have created to understand and communicate the world around me. I now work with a variety of mediums and frequently use acrylic paints for I enjoy how I can manipulate and push about different colors, values, and textures. My goal as an artist is to produce honest work that connects us to our world in unexpected ways.

When I paint a still life, I choose simple everyday objects. I add color to the set ups using flowers, paper, or fabric, until intuitively I find something pleasing. Typically I use a nearby window to light the subject. I squint and look for the interesting patterns of lights and darks. With my rural and urban landscapes, I choose to paint what I like to look at or what peaks my interest. I attempt to simplify what I see into basic color-value shapes and pleasing designs. With all paintings I look for elements of surprise and try for honesty via focused observation.

My art instructor at California State University of Long Beach, John Lincoln, was most influential on molding my artistic tastes. He introduced me to artists I continue to admire. There is also the influence of Fairfield Porter. This Harvard graduate let his painting dictate the results. I admire him for that and that he found inspiration in objects and scenes of his everyday surroundings. He also looked for value shapes, which dissolved one into another, something I find exciting. For the past several years I have continued my studies with two very special artist in Philadelphia. They have enhanced my knowledge of what art is and so much more.

Hopefully my work achieves a sense of the ‘here and now’, depth, and beauty. In the end I want to show honest expressive paintings that communicate on many levels.
